The Gaming Giant Hires Apex Legends Lead to Revitalize Struggling Hero Shooter Ambitious Title

2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Shift Comes After Lukewarm Feedback

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a distinct vision.

Ismailer noted that the developers is now reimagining the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to address player expectations.

A Pattern of Key Hires

The news mirrors a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the entire message from the president's memo:

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a message, I stated the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented designers we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that partnership to endure.”

With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The community feedback from last fall’s the game demo was informative. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the need for a more distinct brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed direction - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our fans.

The trust in this project strengthens every day. To advance the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the incoming Director of the team. After several months of discussions, he starts with us on the specified date.

His leadership and background in the PVP shooter space is vast, having spent the past decade and a half creating and leading some of the most popular titles in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Let’s together in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all looking forward to continue seeing the evolution of the game in the months to follow.

David

Background of the Incoming Head

Brinkman presently serves in the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had periods at other industry leaders.

Game Details and Vision

The upcoming game was announced in October 2024 in conjunction with a early access event. At the time, the developers presented the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the genre."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description reads. "Challenge the competition with fresh skills, challenges, and obstacles that change every session. Will you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Or take a risk, risk it all, and trust your squad can achieve the highest spot? The option is yours."

The game does not have an official release date or consoles, but enthusiasts can look forward to additional details as creation continues.
